This has been a crazy week. From insane highs to devastating lows and then back again, it all commenced in two glorious days of Christmas joy.
Wednesday found me back in that self-deprecating wondering and questioning how long I could fool myself into believing I was really a banker. And then Thursday I settled into a chair in my boss' office sharing the same sentiments. Friday brought about a different mindset as I reared up my stubborn pride and started hammering out phone calls and setting up accounts aligning myself to have the best sales month I've had in this new bank. I still have a long way to go and all while heading into the three statistically slowest weeks in all of finance, but I'm a different man than I was a year ago and I'm not going down without a fight.
Friday night, last night, Alli and I walked into our small mountain town for the most festive night of the year, Holly Jolly. It started with the lighting of the Christmas tree in the future home of the Town Square, complete with the High School marching band playing Christmas songs and the whole town singing along. We then crossed over into the two-block shopping district where all the stores and quaint craft shops not only stayed open late but also served complimentary cheese, crackers, cookies, popcorn, ice cream, fudge, cider, hot chocolate, and even wine. Everywhere we walked we enjoyed local music, laughing smiles, and pure happiness.
After a short workday this morning, I came home and hung multiple strands of large Clark Griswold lights along the roof line of the entire front and side of my house. Then Alli and I headed into town for the annual Christmas Parade on Main Street. We each bought an amazing sundae at the local ice cream parlor and settled into our spot on the street to watch one of the most fun, awesome, exciting parades I've ever seen. After it was over we walked to the fancy schmancy Inn down the road to view all the Christmas trees decorated by local businesses for charity. Then we walked to the lake down the mountain to walk amongst the paper lantern luminaries that lined the walking path all the way around the lake.
The town was alive with the aging hippies, small children, and an open-minded spirit that makes this place the gem that it is in an otherwise judgmental, ugly world. There were no evil attitudes, no sad faces, and no sense of hurry or anxiety. It hit us deeply that we live in this slice of heaven... this place that people come to for escape and solitude... this place that families look to as their own private getaway... this place we call home.
We drove to the cute little house I call home to a glorious view of Christmas lights lighting up the peaks and lines of the house. Life may get rough every once in awhile, and I may question my place in it from time to time, but with Alli by my side and us starting down the road of life together, it will always be worth it.
